Don’t forget to make sure the back door of the hive is closed when you install the Beetle Baffle. An inner cover with a notched rim is helpful to hive ventilation but, left unscreened, leaves the top of the hive accessible to wax moths, small hive beetles, marauding ees, and other undesirables. It also compromises the best performance of the Beetle Baffle.

The Fix

Affix a patch of window screen (conventional metal and not 8-mesh) over the hole in the center of the inner cover using short staples or aluminum tape. Make sure it is beetle-tight. Bees may propolize some or all of the screen when nights are cool. If the screen becomes fully blocked, replace it with a new piece of screen. Always install the inner cover so that the notch in the rim faces up.
